Southern Oregon University identifies sustainable practices as a specific emphasis within our University mission. This commitment is realized, in part, by offering a wide-range of exceptional programs that emphasize sustainability and environmental awareness. SOU students will find courses emphasizing our commitment to sustainability in a wide-range of programs from art to business.
Sustainability
Offered as Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science, and as a Secondary Discipline Minor
Our Bachelor of Science and Secondary Discipline Minor in Sustainability not only prepares students for a wide variety of employment in governmental agencies, industry, non-profits and environmental consulting firms, but also prepares students for graduate and professional schools in environmental policy and management, geography, law, public policy, wildlife management, and sustainability management. Our unique curriculum is designed to integrate physical and natural sciences, social science, project management, and business.
Biology
Offered as Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science
Excellence in undergraduate education is the first priority of the SOU Department of Biology. The program emphasizes hands-on, exploratory learning in laboratory and field settings in a wide variety of specialty areas including ecology, molecular biology, microbiology, physiology, evolution, developmental biology, cell biology, and systematics.
Environmental Education
Offered as a Master’s of Science in Biology
Become part of a team and learn to empower students through place-based education. The Klamath-Siskiyou Bioregion provides a living classroom where students can explore and gain an appreciation for our natural world.

Offered as a Bachelor of Science, Secondary Discipline Minor, and Certificate in Sustainability Leadership (CSL)
At SOU, the Environmental Science and Policy program provides the opportunity to develop an understanding of the complexity of natural systems, natural resource use and sustainability enabling students to appreciate and solve dynamic environmental issues.
Outdoor Adventure Leadership
Offered as Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master’s Degree in Outdoor Adventure & Expedition Leadership, and Secondary Discipline Minor
The Outdoor Adventure Leadership degree program inspires passion for self-development and transformation by providing opportunities to explore and learn leadership skills through outdoor adventure.
Sociology & Anthropology
Offered as Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Secondary Discipline Minor, Cultural Resource Management Certificate, and Regional Studies and Applied Research Certificate
The Sociology and Anthropology program allows students to develop the conceptual and analytic skills for understanding identity, behavior, culture, power, and social change.
